The Friendly Island

first. everything else negotiable.

First-time defaults, no missteps

  • Pinel Island shuttle boat from Cul-de-Sac, easiest full-day beach
  • Creole Rock snorkeling top French-side reef, the reef has rules. follow them.
  • Grand Case dinner strip where dinner is the point
  • Orient Bay long, serviced, pick a club. commit.
  • Mullet Bay clean swim beach, the sane version of Maho
  • Simpson Bay night base dinner corridor, short drives, late options

House rules

  • Two flags, one island French and Dutch sides cross seamlessly. no border control, no passport between sides. menus, prices, and timekeeping all shift
  • Two currencies Euro on French side, US dollar on Dutch. dollars accepted almost everywhere. cards work but lolos and small shops are cash
  • Rent a car the island only works by car. taxis are expensive and scarce. Dutch-side rentals are cheaper
  • Drive on the right both sides. roads are narrow, potholed, and unlit at night. drive slowly
  • Maho is a spectacle, not a stunt watch planes land from the sand or Sunset Beach Bar. never stand behind the jet blast fence. people have died
  • Restaurants close mid-week Grand Case rooms typically close one weekday. check before driving across the island
  • Hurricane season June through November, peak August to October. real risk. travel insurance is not optional
  • Reef rules Creole Rock is a réserve naturelle. no fins on coral, no fish feeding, no anchoring. boats use moorings
  • Topless is normal on French-side beaches, particularly Orient Bay. do not photograph strangers
  • Lolos eat cash bring small bills. service is order-at-counter, sit-where-you-find-room, leave when done
